Sanded grout, or grout that contains sand particles, can be sealed after it is cleaned. A sealant acts as a barrier against staining and prevents moisture from seeping into the grout and under the tiles. Sealers are only used on water-based grout, not grout that is made with epoxy. Sealants are sprayed on or applied directly to the grout with a brush or roller. Penetrating sealers soak right into the grout. This helps to create an additional tint when you apply grout colorant to the grout or if you want the original color to be darker. A non-pigmented penetrating sealer won’t change the color. Keep in mind that cracks or crumbles in the grout lines need to be repaired before a sealer is used.
